Livestock and Waterfowl
In the piedmont region of central North Carolina, the Kuykendall's not only raise Border Collies but a variety of livestock and waterfowl. Our farm and training facility encompass rolling hills, woods, streams and ponds so a variety of training options are available. The ultimate goal when a trained dog leaves the training facility is to be finished to the desired level of our buyers requests.
Purebred Dorsets
A small flock of purebred Dorsets are a staple, these sheep are high class examples of their breed, excellent producers, lambing out of season, and offer heavy milking characteristics, growing and thriving all while being used to train dogs on. The flock was started in the 70s from the University of Connecticut stock, bringing in some Mississippi State ewes and just recently a few Virginia Tech Dorsets were added. The combination is a uniform flock of excellent structural correctness, soundness, and type that is also heat tolerant and worm resistant. More information can be obtained about this dual purpose breed at the Continental Dorset Club website.
Boer/Spanish Goats
Boer/Spanish cross nannies are also raised and used on the farm, A small, thick meat type goat can be utilized for training then later sold to the ethnic markets. While the sheep graze the goats help keep the weeds at a minimal, they browse, keeping things trimmed up rather nicely
Water Fowl
A large percentage of Kuykendall’s Border Collies are sold for wildlife management and goose control purposes. To finish a highly trained goose dog, geese and ducks are used both on land as well as on the ponds. This variety gives our dogs an edge over competitors dogs as they are already acclimated to the look of a variety of birds, the transition to the real world is an easy one for our dogs.
Livestock (sheep and goats) are available on occasion, either dog broke stock or stock for breeding purposes can be reserved, call or email 2-3 months in advance of your required time frame.
