Kuykendall’s Border Collies can finally share some exciting and history making news!!! For the last two years we have been busy helping the USDA with the Nene (hawaiian goose) pilot project. The Nene in 1967 was put on the endangered list with as few as 30 birds remaining on the islands. The Hokuala Resort was deemed a bird sanctuary to help build numbers and the biologists certainly did, today Nene numbers are around 2500 plus. However with the growth in population so did the potential for bird strike. The resort is sandwiched between the two runways of the Lihue airport. USDA needed a non lethal solution to this problem. That was when the Kuykendall’s were brought on board. Previously no official dogs had been used to haze Nene, so we made history!
This has been the most exciting and rewarding experiences saving lives and saving wildlife. Thank you USDA for entrusting us with this special project.
